A common phrase to use when you are feeling great is to tell people you feel like a million bucks. But according to a recent article in Medical News Today, it might be more accurate to say you feel like a quarter million bucks. Researchers at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom studied the sleep patterns of more than 30,000 people and discovered that, when their test subjects received better quality and quantity of sleep, their well-being improvements were comparable to lottery winners two years after winning a $250,000 jackpot.

While we all dream of winning the big money lottery, the more realistic, and arguably more important lottery, is winning the sleep jackpot. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders have emerged as one of the public's top health concerns. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 50 and 70 million people in the U.S. have a sleep disorder. Furthermore, the report showed that more than one-third of adults simply do not get enough sleep.

The CDC report specifically calls out the public health risks of poor sleep quality, including its links to serious health problems such as sudden weight gain, chronic obesity and accelerated aging. Poor sleep health is also associated with greater insulin resistance, metabolic abnormalities, and weight gain, which might then result in diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

According to the report, unintentionally falling asleep, nodding off while driving, and having difficulty performing daily tasks because of sleepiness may contribute to creating hazardous situations within a given day/week.

Prevention looked at the top 10 reasons why people can’t sleep, but there was one important factor noticeably absent from that list — the mattress. A great mattress will be fit to address body type, sleep position and comfort preferences. I manage Darvin Furniture's mattress business and I continue to see more and more data about how critical sleep is to the general public safety – not to mention people's overall health – and I recognize my job is so much more than just mattresses. It's about people. And there's a lot at stake.

“I recognize my job is so much more than just mattresses. It’s about people. And there’s a lot at stake.”

At Darvin Furniture, we have more than 130 different types of mattresses in our 10,000-square- foot bedding showroom. We offer the largest selection of mattresses in Chicagoland and the Midwest. There's no doubt, a good night's sleep is available under our roof. All you need to do is talk to one of our mattress specialists who can match you up with the best fit.

Depression, cancer and obesity have all been linked with sleep deprivation, which makes my job and the job of my staff that much more important. We have to understand the Darvin customer’s needs inside and out in order to match them with the perfect mattress. And as science has shown, a better night’s sleep leads to a better day.

The headline in the Medical News Today article was an eye-opener: Better sleep can make us feel like a million bucks. It made me think that while I certainly didn't have any million-dollar mattresses – it sure did put focus on how important finding the right mattress was for everyone. Rest assured, finding the right mattress for you can be a difference maker that will never break the bank.
