Are Standing Desks Really Effective?

Research says ‘yes’ and kids love the flexibility to move around

August 3, 2021 | by Janet Alyinovich

Over the last few years there has been a huge outcry from educators and physicians alike regarding the health of children and the growing challenge of childhood obesity. Parents who may not be able to watch over their children every waking moment are in search of answers.

Between the time kids spend sitting in class, sitting in the car or bus, sitting while eating and doing homework – not to mention watching television or playing on phones or computers – they can be seated more than 85 percent of their waking hours, says research by Kaiser Family Foundation.

Standing Desks

Why Stand?
Standing desks have become extremely popular to assist in keeping fit. They can also help overall posture. Experts point out that it is easier to incorporate some physical activity when standing, rather than sitting. A standing desk offers an individual, child or adult, an opportunity to adopt a healthier overall lifestyle.

Walking around a little each hour, even just around the room or going to get a drink, is better than sitting for hour after hour. Sitting down might be more comfortable, but it's much easier to forget to actually move around.

Embrace Adaptability
Since kids are continually growing, a good in-between solution for a traditional desk is a sit-stand desk. These are adjustable in height so you can have both a sitting experience and a standing experience.

Roll It Out
Switching up a desk location, whether it’s the bedroom, the living room, or the kitchen – and then back again – can make school days feel far more interesting than when you're stuck at one spot in the house. Get a desk that allows for a change of scenery to keep daily learning fresh.

At the end of the day, whether you sit or stand, it comes down to what you prefer and what’s most comfortable. Since getting the work done is important and kids need focus to remain on task, having a desk option that does both, and is healthier in the long run, is a choice many parents are embracing.
