GET TO KNOW: Air Force Veteran Joe Dzik
Recognizing National Hire A Vet Day, we wanted to start by telling you about someone who has been with our Darvin family of employees for more than 20 years. Joe Dzik is our Director of Warehouse Operations, he is an Air Force veteran, and we thank him for his service!
Q: Tell us about your Air Force career?
I served as an Intelligence Analyst during the Cold War, Libyan Conflict, Operation Desert Storm in the United States Air Force from 1984 through 1993. I served as an Air Refueling Operator in the Air Refueling Wing at O’Hare airport in the United States Reserves from 1993 through 1996.
Q: How does your military experience benefit you in your current position
To be a successful leader, you must know what it’s like to have been led in a good direction but also in a bad direction. You build upon the good experiences to make them better and work on correcting the bad experiences to become great leader, one that sets an excellent example for other employees. The goal is for employees to not only follow, but to become leaders themselves. This is the sign of a true leader.

Q: What was your first job working at Darvin?
Started out in Customer Service (Part-Time) in April 2000
Q: What is your current position at Darvin?
I am the Director of Warehouse Operations for Darvin Furniture & Mattress and I work out of the Distribution Center located in Mokena, Illinois.
Q: What was your position before becoming the Director of Warehouse Operations?
I was the Inventory Manager at the Distribution Center from approx. 2002 through 2015, then I performed the role of DC Operations from 2016 through 2021.
Q: How many employees are you responsible for at the warehouse?

Q: What are your primary responsibilities?
To ensure customers receive quality merchandise by managing all aspects associated with the DC warehouse, including Staffing, Maintenance, Payroll, Training, Shipping, Receiving, Inventory, Equipment, Productivity, Efficiency, and Union Negotiations.
Q: What do you like about working at Darvin?
Overall, very pleased with the culture of Darvin Furniture and love working with so many talented people, some of whom I have had the pleasure of working with for over 20 years.

Q: What advice would you have for someone coming out of the military and into the civilian workforce?
Never forget where you came from, where you are, and where you want to be. The civilian workforce is different from the military, so you must adapt and stay focused on the new workforce mission. Utilize your military training and experiences to guide, but not lead you. You are in charge of your destiny, so set your end goal high but keep your daily goals within reach. As you reach and exceed these goals, set new ones. Don’t just do it, do it better. If you follow this mindset, you will be successful!
