3 Ways to encourage good back-to-school habits

August 3, 2022

It's that time of the year again when the focus turns from long, summer days to the classroom, and parents prepare to adjust for their kids heading back to school.

Just like preparation for school requires back-to-school shopping for supplies for that first day of classes, parents are also making sure their kids have all the tools at home to succeed best in their education. For many parents, that planning starts with a designated place to do homework and it includes convenient options to comfortably read, write – and get a good night's sleep!

1) Designated Learning Space
Designated spaces matter and nobody is impacted more than kids. Identifying distinct places at home for homework and virtual teaching lessons is critical to a student's ability to focus and retain information.

Creating kid-friendly places to take the edge off of learning and make it a bit more comfortable and fun is one way to encourage learning. Whether it's decorating a room with a child's favorite things or removing the clutter from a room to encourage focus, don't underestimate the impact the contents of a room have on a student's willingness to study.

If you have room for a workstation – or even a designated desk – don't be afraid to double-dip on functionality. A desk can easily serve other functions that are less formal than homework. Today's standing desks are popular and encourage healthy habits, while other desks are easily folded out from bunk beds and provide function in smaller rooms.

2) Capture A Child's World
A kid's room design that reflects their interests or personality will accomplish a lot when it comes to getting them to sit down (or stand up) at the desk to do homework. Creating a child's world means capturing the youthful excitement of color, texture, and patterns, while also providing solid functionality with quality furniture that will stand up over time.

You want a child to love being in their room. Look for furniture with built-in functionality. Beds with bookcase headboards, storage footboards, built-in charging stations, nightlights, and laptop stands are just a few of the cool options available that will make your kids love their spaces and encourage independence.

3) Embrace Technology in Design
Science provides plenty of data to suggest just how important a good night’s sleep is for people in general – and we know it is critical for a child's proper development. Firstly, choose a bed that leaves space for other functions in their room. If it's too crowded, nobody will want to spend time there.

Furniture designers are presenting parents with kids' furniture options that deliver practical function and cool aesthetics. Look for built-in charging ports for phones and other devices in bed frames and flip-out desktops for homework and creative tasks.

Don't underestimate lighting. Encouraging kids to read in an adequately lit space is easy with flexible, built-in task lighting on many beds and desktops. If you make it comfortable and convenient to read or do homework, you are overcoming potential obstacles to their success.

Today’s kids have more options than ever to stylishly express their personalities in their rooms while enjoying the convenience of modern technology and the safety that also brings their parents peace of mind.
