Darvin Historical Timeline

1920 - Louis Darvin immigrates from Poland with family and opens furniture business begins by selling furniture door-to-door
1940s - First Darvin Store opens at 648 W. 120th St. in Chicago, IL (5,000 sq. ft.) David Darvin (2nd generation) joins his father in business 1st known as Darvin Furniture & Appliances
1950s - As business grew, the Darvin family moved it’s location to the corner of 555 W. 120th St, Chicago, IL
1960s - The Darvin family then moved to 12920 S. Halsted St, Chicago, IL People could pay their utility bill and have coffee and a donut
1960s - By the 1960’s the Darvin Furniture business was flourishing, and the family expanded the 12920 South Halsted Street, Chicago Illinois to double it's size
1970s - David’s sons Steve and Marty join the family business (3rd generation)
1970s Darvin opens Suburban location at Rt 30 and Crawford in Matteson, IL - for 8 years Darvin Furniture runs 2 locations
1980 - Orland Park location opens, 25 miles south of downtown Chicago (Matteson location closes and Halsted location would remain open until 1988)
1999 - David, Marty & Steve Darvin break ground on Distribution Center in Mokena, IL
2000 - A 218,000 sq. ft. Distribution Center opens in Mokena, IL creating new jobs for community
1980s - 2000 - 5 Expansions are made to the Orland Park Showroom
2004 - Darvin named as one of America’s Top 100 Furniture Retailers by Furniture Today (continues on today)
2005 - The late David Darvin (1915-2005) named Pillar of the Industry by Midwest Furniture Club
2010 - Marty and Steve begin their involvement with City of Hope
2010 - A 10,000 sq. ft. Mattress Gallery is added to the Darvin Showroom
2015 - A 35,000 sq. ft. Clearance & Outlet Center is added to the 2nd floor of the Darvin Showroom
2015 - Newly expanded Area Rug Gallery opens in the Orland Park Showroom
2016 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress receives the Illinois Retail Merchants of the Year Award
2016 - Breaking ground on new facade and galleries at Orland Park, IL showroom
2017 - Darvin launches E-Commerce platform

2018 - Grand Opening of Darvin’s new facade and interior galleries
2018 - Darvin contributes to Orland Park Food Pantry

2018 - Darvin recieves National Honor 2018 Leadership Award from Furniture Today
2019 - Darvin receives Community Pride Award
2019 - Darvin recognized by Village of Orland Park with Outstanding Accomplishment Award
2019 - Darvin begins Delivery Tracking service on website for customers
2020 - Darvin becomes an (ESOP) employee-owned company and names Will Harris the President to oversee store operations Steve now CEO and Marty Chairman of the Board
2020 - New President Will Harris establishes Critical Needs Call Center to provide customer support during pandemic creating a dedicated sales force for e-commerce
2020 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress celebrates 100th Anniversary
2020 - Darvin helps dedicate Sensory Room at Orland Park Library
2021 - Darvin hosts event to raise money for South Suburban Crisis Center
2021 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress receives national recognition as a Retail Giant in Bedding
2022 - Darvin expands Mokena, IL Distribution Center as part of its response to consumer demand for in-stock items
2022 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress makes a donation to support war-torn Ukraine
2022 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress hosts Blood Drive to address local shortages
2022 - Darvin Furniture & Mattress named a member of the Illinois Historical Society
Steve and Marty Darvin honored with Spirit of Life Award from City of Hope
